What is curcumin?
Curcuma (Curcuma longa), also known as turmeric, from the ginger family is native to India and South East Asia. Many people are sure to be familiar with its use to make curry powder and as a natural colouring. But in addition to these, curcuma has been used in Indonesia and India (Ayurveda) for several thousand years. The main ingredient is curcumin and other curcuminoids and tetrahydro-curcuminoids that belong to the secondary plant substances of phenols.
However, up until now the benefits of curcumin could not be fully utilised as a person can only absorb a little bit of natural curcumin. Or in other words: the curcumin’s bioavailability is very low. This is associated with the fact that curcumin is fat-soluble and therefore can only be poorly absorbed in the intestines’ aqueous environment. 90% of it is excreted again. This is clearly demonstrated when you look into the intestines of a person who has just consumed curcumin: it is dyed yellow, a sign that the curcumin has not reached the metabolism or has only reached it to a small extent. Until now curcumin was mainly combined with piperine to improve bioavailability. Although the blood concentration increases as a result, it only lasted one hour and then rapidly dropped to the original value. The sustainable absorption of curcumin therefore cannot be achieved with piperine, which irritates the mucous membrane.

The fat-soluble (lipophilic) curcumin molecules are embedded in a ring of glucose molecules (a kind of sugar, so-called cyclodextrin) to the effect that it results in a hydrophilic (water-loving) exterior and a lipophilic, i.e. fat-friendly, cavity inside it. The curcumin molecule stays in this cavity until it has reached the intestines. There it is individually transported to the intestinal wall by the cyclodextrin molecules where it can be absorbed while the cyclodextrin is broken down and excreted.
The high bioavailability of curcumin has also been scientifically proven. In the process the test persons were given normal curcumin once and three different curcumin preparations where the manufacturers claim that the bioavailability is particularly high, including Curcumin Extrakt 45 from Dr. Wolz. The result: Curumin Extrakt 45 was absorbed 40 times more efficiently than the pure curcumin powder! Consequently, Curcumin Extrakt 45 provides the organism with the therapeutic potential of curcumin to a considerably higher extent than previously available curcumin products.
